Mentoring Underrepresented Students in STEM

Dr. Isiah M. Warner

When Dr. Isiah Warner began as a chemistry professor at LSU in 1992, there had never been more than three African-Americans in chemistry at one time. Now, LSU is ranked first in the nation in the production of African-Americans with PhDs in chemistry, with between 25 and 30 African-American students in chemistry each year. In addition, more than half of Dr. Warner’s graduate students are women. In this talk, Dr. Warner shares his successes in diversifying STEM fields and provides advice for both students and mentors about how they can maximize the success of their mentoring relationships.
